Spurs Going With 3-Guard Starting Lineup in Season Opener vs. Thunder

The San Antonio Spurs are opening the season with a bold look: a three-guard starting lineup of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, alongside Devin Vassell and Victor Wembanyama. The unit gets its first official test when San Antonio hosts the Oklahoma City Thunder in Tuesday’s season opener.

The decision comes straight from head coach Mitch Johnson, who has settled on the guard-heavy combination after preseason experimentation.

Fox, Castle and Harper Form the Backcourt Core

The trio gives San Antonio a dynamic mix at the guard spots: Fox’s veteran speed and scoring, Castle’s downhill attacking and physical defense, and Harper’s fearless shooting, which stood out during preseason play. Castle’s ability to draw help and spray the ball out to shooters adds another layer to the attack.

The group already saw minutes together during the preseason, and Johnson appears convinced enough to carry it into the games that count. With Julian Champagnie and Kel’el Ware shifting to bench roles, the Spurs will lean heavily on their guards to set the tone.

A Statement Lineup Against the Defending-Champion Thunder

Opening the season against the Thunder — and their elite defense — is no small test. But the Spurs look ready to lean into pace, spacing and ball pressure, with Wembanyama’s two-way dominance anchoring everything. If the three-guard look clicks, it could become a defining feature of San Antonio’s season.

The question now: can Fox, Castle and Harper all elevate offensively at the same time against championship-level competition? Tuesday night will give the first real answer.
