The new Street Fighter movie has hadouken’d its way to the top of the box office. The video game adaptation opened in theaters on October 16 and took the weekend crown with $31 million domestically and $20.1 million internationally for a $51.1 million worldwide debut.

The film got off to a strong start with a $13 million Friday, and wrestling fans had a big reason to show up: the movie stars Roman Reigns as Akuma, Cody Rhodes as Guile and NJPW star Hirooki Goto as E. Honda.

A fan-favorite plot, a divided critical response

The story follows estranged street fighters Ryu and Ken Masters, who are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament — a brutal clash of fists, fate and fury hiding a deadly conspiracy that forces them to confront each other and the demons of their past.

Critics and audiences are split: the film holds a 41% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes but a much healthier 79% popcorn (audience) rating — a classic “critics vs. fans” gap.

Wrestling star power pays off

With Reigns and Rhodes headlining as Akuma and Guile, the film leaned hard into its WWE crossover appeal, and the opening numbers suggest that bet paid off. The question now is whether the movie has legs beyond its opening weekend — or whether audiences knock it out in round two.
