After CM Punk suffered a triceps injury in the 2024 men’s Royal Rumble, Drew McIntyre famously looked into the camera and said, “I prayed for this, and it happened.” The line became an instant meme, repeated in sports, pop culture, and far beyond wrestling. Now McIntyre has revealed the line wasn’t his idea at all — and his original version was far too much for TV.

Triple H Pitched The Iconic Line Himself
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, McIntyre explained that the legendary line was actually the PG version of his promo — and it came straight from Triple H. “I knew talking to Triple H during the day that this is going to be so good,” McIntyre said. “I had an idea and it was too much. It would have offended a lot of people, which I’m very good at.”
He continued: “He helped me reel it back, and then Hunter himself came out with the line, which I ended up using. He dialed it back, and the way he said it and the cadence of how it’s to be said — he said it like that, and I got so excited. He’s obviously a savant when it comes to this business.”
The Delivery Made It A Classic
McIntyre said he knew immediately the line would live forever: “I know as a fan, I would lose my mind. Didn’t think I’d be seeing it to this day for everything, no matter what. It’s sports, it’s outside of wrestling, it’s constantly me pointing, ‘I prayed for this, and it happened.'”
The Scottish Warrior revealed he delivered the promo in a sympathetic tone about Punk’s injury — “I understand what it’s like to have things taken away from me” — right before dropping the hammer: “But I hate that son of a bitch.”
Feud Of The Decade
The rivalry between McIntyre and Punk raged throughout 2024, culminating in a Hell in a Cell match at WWE Bad Blood. McIntyre noted that the feud was voted the best of the 2020s. McIntyre has been off WWE TV since WrestleMania 42, but his coldest line ever still echoes across the internet every single day.
