Michael Douglas Asked Marvel to Kill Off His 'Ant-Man' Character: 'They Wouldn't Let Me'

If Michael Douglas had his way, his Marvel journey would have ended nearly a decade ago. The 82-year-old Oscar winner revealed on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that he asked Marvel to kill off his Dr. Hank Pym after 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp — and the studio flatly refused.

“They Wouldn’t Let Me”

Douglas, who was on the podcast promoting his new memoir One Helluva Ride, confirmed the long-running rumor with characteristic bluntness: “I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me.” Instead, the actor who debuted as the original Ant-Man in 2015’s Ant-Man was summoned back for Avengers: Endgame in 2019 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023.

His motive for joining the MCU in the first place had nothing to do with comic books. After surviving stage 4 cancer, Douglas took stock of what he had never done and told his agents: “I’ve never done a green screen movie. I’d like to do one of these green screen movies to see what they’re like, you know? Because it’s amazing. It’s nothing, just a green screen, and they show you the pictures of what it’s gonna look like when it’s all finished.”

“It’s Hard Acting, Man”

The reality proved tougher than the pitch. “It’s hard acting, man,” Douglas admitted. “It’s coming at you here, this and that, you know… We did Ant-Man and Paul Rudd was a wonderful actor — a lovely group — but then you can’t get out of it.”

It wasn’t his only attempt at a glorious exit. In 2024, Douglas told The View he had lobbied for a big finish in Quantumania: “I said I’d like to have a serious death, with all these great special effects. There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects.”

Whether Marvel finally grants his wish remains an open question. So far, Paul Rudd and Kathryn Newton are the only Ant-Man alumni confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. But in a universe where death is rarely permanent, Douglas may never truly escape the Quantum Realm — no matter how hard he asks.
