NCIS: Origins Unites Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly for First Gibbs-DiNozzo Reunion in a Decade

Two of television’s most beloved partners finally share the screen again. Mark Harmon’s Jethro Gibbs and Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo reunite for the first time in a decade in Tuesday night’s episode of “NCIS: Origins” — and one of the show’s producers says it was unforgettable: “It was a special day in my life, seeing that happen after a decade.”

A Reunion 23 Years in the Making

Gibbs and DiNozzo first forged their fraternal — and strictly hierarchical — bond when the original “NCIS” launched 23 years ago, with the famous head slaps becoming part of TV lore. This time, expect no head slaps: a lot of water has passed under the bridge, and the characters have grown. DiNozzo returns this season in a matured new role as director of the agency, while Gibbs remains retired but is working a case of his own across the entire season of the spinoff.

Short, But Sweet for Longtime Fans

The reunion bookends the October 20 episode — brief at the beginning and end, but, by all accounts, extremely sweet for the fans who have longed to see the fictional — and real — men share a frame again. Harmon’s presence has always loomed over “Origins” as the show’s elder anchor, so having Weatherly’s DiNozzo walk into his orbit completes a circle for the franchise.

For a series built on legacy, this is the crossover moment NCIS loyalists have waited a decade for.
