'Ruthless' Rio Ngumoha, 18, Becomes Youngest Liverpool Player With a Champions League Assist in 4-3 Villarreal Thriller

In a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha didn’t score once — but the night belonged to him. The teenager produced a coming-of-age masterclass in Liverpool’s 4-3 Champions League win over Villarreal, dragging his team back from two goals down with two decisive assists and a performance that had the Kop singing his name.

Two Assists, One Breakout Night

Liverpool were woeful for much of the first half and trailed Villarreal by two goals when Ngumoha took responsibility. After Alexis Mac Allister pulled one back, the youngster found space to dink in a delightful ball that was met by Ronald Araujo for the equaliser.

After the break, Ngumoha waltzed past Sergi Cardona again and set up Mac Allister to give Liverpool the lead, before Florian Wirtz added what proved to be a vital fourth. By the time the teenager was replaced in the 74th minute, chants of “Rio, Rio, Rio” had repeatedly rung around Anfield, and goalkeeper Alisson embraced him shortly after he was handed UEFA’s player of the match award.

Record Breaker at 18 Years and 52 Days

At 18 years and 52 days, Ngumoha became the youngest Liverpool player ever to either score or assist in the Champions League. The numbers underline the display: 12 touches in the opposition box, seven out of eight dribbles completed, and two crucial assists.

“It’s up there with one of the best games I’ve played,” Ngumoha told Amazon Prime. “Whenever I get the ball and there’s an opportunity to go one versus one, I’ll just keep going and be ruthless.”

Former Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge, on punditry duty, was effusive: “On the ball, this kid has so much potential… What he does with the ball at his feet — that is God-given ability.”

From Newcastle Breakthrough to England Debut

It is over a year since Ngumoha burst onto the scene with a memorable stoppage-time winner at Newcastle. He has been in and out since, impressing in flashes and earning his England debut earlier this season.

Minutes on his preferred left have been hard to come by with Cody Gakpo and Bradley Barcola competing down that flank, but head coach Andoni Iraola wants his wingers comfortable on both sides — and Ngumoha’s improvement on the right has been rapid. “I feel like I’ve got a lot better playing there from the Newcastle game until now,” he said after Saturday’s win over Brentford.
