Troy Deeney Names Premier League Team of the Week: Brighton Takeover, Haaland Strikes Again, Maddison Returns

Troy Deeney Names Premier League Team of the Week

Troy Deeney has named his Premier League Team of the Week, and it’s a Brighton takeover — with three Seagulls players plus manager Fabian Hurzeler making the cut after their big win over their nearest rivals, while Erling Haaland and a returning James Maddison headline the rest of the XI.

Deeney was blunt about the overall quality of the weekend’s action, calling much of it poor — which made Brighton’s clean sheet stand out all the more. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen gets the gloves ahead of Arsenal’s David Raya, while young defender Luka Vuskovic earns his spot at the heart of the back line. Hurzeler, meanwhile, is manager of the week, with Deeney admitting he’d doubted the German before watching him deliver “week in and week out.”

Diego Gomez’s Wonder Goal Steals the Show

The pick of the weekend came from Diego Gomez, who scored from the halfway line — a strike Deeney needed no more words for. Chelsea’s Pedro Neto takes the other wide spot after his two-goal match-winning display, and Sander Berge anchors midfield after dominating Fulham’s massive six-pointer against Hull.

Young Swiss star Johan Manzambi, “by far the player of the month so far” according to Deeney, continues carrying Aston Villa, while Diogo Dalot gets a nod for a high-energy, resilient shift at left-back for Manchester United.

Maddison and Haaland Complete the XI

The feel-good pick is James Maddison, who marked his Spurs return with a top-corner finish that Deeney called great to see after the midfielder’s long layoff. Up front, it’s the inevitable Erling Haaland — already in for the third time this season, with two goals against a struggling Ipswich side and “another 10 times to go” on the way, per Deeney.

Arsenal’s Gabriel and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill round out the defense after both got the job done in gritty 1-0 and clean-sheet wins respectively.
