Former WWE writer Jimmy Jacobs has pulled back the curtain on one of wrestling’s biggest misconceptions — fans have spent years blaming the company’s creative writers for decisions they never actually controlled. According to Jacobs, when Vince McMahon didn’t want someone on television, the writing team often ended up taking the heat for it anyway.

Advisers, Not Shot-Callers
The biggest misunderstanding, Jacobs says, is the difference between being a writer and actually running creative. He described WWE’s writers as advisers who could bring ideas to the table — but couldn’t force the person at the top to use them.
“There is such a misconception about what the job of creative is. Writers aren’t the head of creative. That’s one thing, but the writers are a different thing. The writers aren’t shot-callers. They’re advisers to the king. That’s what they are.”
Jacobs noted that this confusion wasn’t limited to fans. In his experience, plenty of wrestlers and veteran personalities also talked about WWE creative without really grasping how it worked behind the scenes. He was genuinely surprised to learn that some WWE talent themselves didn’t fully understand where their creative direction was coming from.
“Creative Has Nothing for You”
That brought Jacobs to one of the most familiar phrases in WWE — “creative has nothing for you.” Fans have often taken it literally and blamed the writing team whenever a wrestler vanished from TV. But Jacobs says that under McMahon, it really meant something much simpler: the boss just didn’t want that wrestler on his show.
For Jacobs, the frustration went deeper than criticism of one era. He argued that unless someone had actually worked on the creative side of the company, they couldn’t really know how those calls were being made — no matter how confidently former wrestlers talk about the business on podcasts and social media.
