iPhone users, your commute just got smarter. Google has finally brought its conversational Gemini AI assistant to Apple CarPlay, nearly 12 months after launching it on Android Auto last year.

The feature is available today for US drivers, with Google confirming a global rollout is also underway. CarPlay users can now talk directly to Gemini inside Google Maps on their car’s infotainment display — activated by tapping the Gemini icon — to get hands-free help while driving.
What It Can Do
This isn’t just voice commands for navigation. Gemini handles multi-step questions, so you can ask for recommendations on places to visit and then have it direct you there while avoiding toll roads, all in one conversation. Google describes it as a conversational way to report traffic disruptions and pull up information about stops and places on the go.
One Catch: No Personal Intelligence Yet
There’s a notable gap, though. The Personal Intelligence features Google announced for Gemini on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in — which let the assistant pull from Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, and Search — didn’t get a mention for CarPlay. Google hasn’t confirmed whether CarPlay users will eventually get the same personalization, but The Verge says it has asked and will update when it hears back. For now, Apple drivers get the smarts without the deep personal touch.
