Interscope Shakes Up Leadership: Michelle An Named Chief Creative Officer, Carter and Alvarez-Smikle Lead Urban

Big moves at Interscope Geffen A&M. The Universal Music Group label announced a round of major executive promotions on October 21, elevating Michelle An to President & Chief Creative Officer while promoting Laura Carter and Ramon Alvarez-Smikle to Co-Presidents of IGA Urban.

An, who will report to Interscope Capitol Labels Group Chairman & CEO John Janick, keeps leading IGA Pop/Rock while expanding her remit across the whole label. Her expanded role will see her helping artists “shape the worlds around their music, from visual identity and storytelling to brand development and long-term career strategy,” the company said.

The Urban Leadership Shake-Up

Carter and Alvarez-Smikle will also report to Janick and work closely with An. The pair are tasked with aligning A&R, marketing innovation, digital strategy, and audience development for IGA Urban‘s artists. Alvarez-Smikle’s responsibilities stretch even further — he’ll build and scale “the digital systems and infrastructure that drive artist success” across both the Urban and Pop/Rock rosters.

The appointments, effective immediately, land a week after Music Business Worldwide reported that Nicole Wyskoarko and Sam Riback were leaving their senior A&R posts at IGA, with An, Carter, and Alvarez-Smikle stepping into broader leadership roles.

Janick’s Bet on Creative Instinct

“IGA has always been defined by original voices and by the teams who back those voices with taste, conviction and care,” Janick said in a statement, praising An’s “clearest creative instinct in the business.” IGA described the new Creative and Urban leadership roles as “designed to give artists deeper partnership and more ways to break through.” For artists on one of music’s most powerful rosters, the message is clear: the next chapter starts now.
