Nao Emoto Launches Manga Adaptation of Mokuyōbi ni wa Cocoa o Novel

Manga artist Nao Emoto has launched a brand-new manga adaptation of Michiko Aoyama’s beloved novel Mokuyōbi ni wa Cocoa o (Cocoa on Thursdays), the series debuted on Tuesday across two platforms: Takarajimasha’s Takarajima Sugoi! Web and the Liniere fashion and lifestyle magazine’s website.

A Cozy Cafe Story Gets the Manga Treatment

The original novel is a gentle, heartwarming tale centered on a quiet cafe. The story follows a barista who notices a familiar pattern: every Thursday, without fail, a woman walks into the cafe, claims the same seat, orders a single cup of cocoa, and writes a letter. But one day, she arrives carrying a completely different mood than usual, and the story unfolds from there.

Aoyama first released the novel back in August 2017, and fans were later treated to a related novel, Itsumo no Mokuyōbi, in August 2022. The manga adaptation marks a new chapter for the cozy story, bringing Emoto’s expressive art style to Aoyama’s intimate world.

Emoto’s Impressive Track Record

This is far from Emoto’s first adaptation. She recently launched a manga adaptation of Shinkoshoto’s story The Strongest Sage With Zero Magic Power on May 1, showing her range across genres from slice-of-life to action fantasy.

Emoto is best known for drawing O Maidens in Your Savage Season (Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo) alongside writer Mari Okada. That series ran in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from December 2016 to September 2019, was released in English by Kodansha USA Publishing, and inspired a television anime that premiered in July 2019.

She also drew the manga adaptation of the Josee, The Tiger and the Fish anime film, serving as its character designer as well, with Yen Press licensing the manga. Earlier in her career, she serialized the romance manga Forget Me Not from 2013 to 2016, inspired by Mag Hsu’s Taiwanese novel. More recently, she adapted NisiOisin’s Shin Honkaku Mahō Shōjo Risuka novels in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from April 2021 to December 2024, with the seventh and final volume published in April 2024.

A Perfect Match

With Emoto’s talent for delicate, emotional storytelling — as seen in her shōjo-style character work — the quiet romance of a woman writing letters over cocoa feels like an ideal fit. Fans of iyashikei and slice-of-life manga will want to keep an eye on this one.
