Jamie Carragher Slams Bruno Fernandes' Como Outburst: "Not What a Manchester United Captain Should Be"

Bruno Fernandes has split football pundits down the middle after publicly questioning Michael Carrick’s tactics following Manchester United’s 4-1 Champions League humbling by Como — and Jamie Carragher has delivered the harshest verdict of all, calling the captain’s outburst “not what a Manchester United captain should be.”

Fernandes told TNT Sports that United’s staff chose not to press man-to-man, saying “sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” and added pointedly: “That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me.” The remarks came a week after Lisandro Martinez made similar headlines following United’s defeat by Atletico Madrid.

Carragher: Bruno Fernandes’ Captaincy Slammed After Como Defeat

Former Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher, working as a summariser on CBS Sports, claimed Fernandes only reacted because he was “embarrassed by the manager [who] brought him off.” Carragher then went further, saying Fernandes himself has long been the reason United cannot press: “He runs all over the place like a kid in the schoolyard for the supporters. They all think he’s working hard. He’s not. He’s killing the rest of the team doing it.” He added: “Watching him throw his arms up every week in a game is an absolute disgrace.”

Schmeichel and Warnock: Keep It In-House

Kasper Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live that Fernandes “probably should not be saying these things,” warning that airing grievances publicly only adds to United’s problems. Stephen Warnock echoed that view on Match of the Day: “Whether you like the manager or not, you’ve got to come together” in the dressing room. Carrick himself hit back, saying whatever the system, “if you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win.” United have now gone seven games without a win since beating Sabah, with just one victory in seven Premier League matches this season.
