Actress Park Se Young just revealed the secret behind her marriage to actor Kwak Jung Wook: after eight years of dating, she simply told him to propose or step aside. The couple opened up about their refreshingly blunt road to the altar on the October 21 episode of KBS 2TV’s The Return of Superman, where they appeared as the show’s newest family.

The couple first crossed paths on the set of the 2012 K-drama School 2013, where Park Se Young played a model student opposite Kwak Jung Wook’s rebellious character. But despite the on-screen chemistry, romance was not instant — the two barely knew each other when filming ended. “People think we fell in love while filming the drama, but we didn’t even have each other’s phone numbers by the time it ended,” Kwak Jung Wook admitted.

They reconnected later through mutual friends, and things turned romantic when Kwak Jung Wook started looking for a church to attend. Their friends suggested Park Se Young, he asked for her number, and the two began going to church together — “eventually, we naturally started dating,” she explained.
But eight years in, Park Se Young was done waiting. With their daughter present during a visit to her drama filming location, the couple told actress Han Go Eun exactly how the marriage happened. Kwak Jung Wook revealed his wife’s exact words: “I’m going to get married. Are you going to marry me? Because if you’re not, I’m going to marry someone else.” Park Se Young’s own summary was even funnier: “I basically grabbed him by the collar and dragged him down the aisle.”
She explained that her husband had never been expressive about his feelings, so she knew she had to take the initiative. When Han Go Eun joked he could at least have answered with something romantic, Park Se Young laughed: “He can’t do things like that. He really can’t.”

Despite the lack of romantic gestures, Kwak Jung Wook clearly made the right call. The couple married in 2022 after eight years together and have since welcomed their daughter, Na El, who now joins them on The Return of Superman.
The episode also revealed that their circle initially reacted skeptically to the pairing. Park Se Young recalled people asking, “Are you sure about him?” because of his intimidating appearance. Kwak Jung Wook said the real reactions were harsher — “Why would you date someone like him? You shouldn’t marry a guy like that!” But the actor joked that looks are deceiving: “In reality, she’s the real troublemaker,” he said, pointing at his wife. Park Se Young happily agreed.
