Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation starring Jenna Ortega as the robot Artificial Friend Klara, hits theaters this weekend — and its soundtrack is a wild mix of indie rock, art-pop and classical giants. The film pairs Violent Femmes and Television with Chopin, Mozart and Vivaldi, plus an original score by Oscar winner Michael Giacchino.

The song list includes Violent Femmes’ 1983 cult classic “Good Feeling,” Television’s late-’70s gem “Days,” Antony & The Johnsons’ “Fistful Of Love,” Lesley Gore’s “Sunshine, Lollipops And Rainbows,” Owen Chaim’s “Straight Jackin Fools” and Disasteradio’s “Believe in Yourself.” Classical picks include Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” and Chopin’s Nocturne No. 20 in C-Sharp Minor.

Speaking to NME, Waititi said Violent Femmes’ “Good Feeling” was a personal pick: “That’s one of my favourite songs of all time. I never thought I’d ever have an opportunity to put one of their songs in one of my films.” The director added that “moments in my life are accompanied by bands like Pixies, Pavement, Femmes, Nirvana,” calling the film proof of his indie-kid credentials.
The film itself follows Klara (Ortega), an Artificial Friend waiting in a store alcove to be chosen, until Josie (Mia Tharia) — a “lifted,” genetically enhanced girl who is gravely ill — picks her. The cast also includes Amy Adams as Josie’s reluctant mother Chrissy, plus Natasha Lyonne, Simon Baker, Steve Buscemi and Rachel House.
Klara and the Sun release and Giacchino score
Mutant is releasing the official soundtrack album, featuring Giacchino’s score — the Academy Award winner behind Up, Ratatouille, The Batman and Rogue One — with a vinyl edition expected to follow. The film is being released in theaters nationwide this weekend by Sony Pictures.
