Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Palmer Sent Off as Spurs Claim Rare Stamford Bridge Win

Tottenham Hotspur picked up just their second Premier League win at Stamford Bridge in 36 years, beating Chelsea 2-0 in a stormy London derby on October 24. A Mike Penders own goal and a late Mathys Tel strike did the damage, with Cole Palmer sent off in between the two goals.

Chelsea 0-2 Tottenham: Penders Own Goal Breaks the Deadlock

Played in torrential rain, the derby stayed goalless through a feisty first half, with both goalkeepers called into action. Chelsea debutant keeper Mike Penders, drafted in after Emiliano Martinez suffered a broken jaw, made several strong saves to keep Spurs at bay.

The breakthrough finally came in the 77th minute. Mateus Fernandes swung in a corner, Penders came to punch clear under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, and the Belgian instead punched the ball backwards into his own net for a nightmare moment on his first league start for the Blues.

Palmer Sees Red Before Tel Seals It

Chelsea’s evening went from bad to worse three minutes later. Cole Palmer, already booked for barging into Fernandes, was shown a second yellow card in the 80th minute for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher, leaving the hosts down to ten men and without their main attacking threat.

Spurs made the extra man count in the 87th minute. Mathys Tel picked the ball up inside his own half, drove deep into Chelsea territory and fired a low strike from distance into the bottom corner to seal a famous win. It was Tottenham’s first away league win at Chelsea since 2018, and it moved Spurs up to 12th in the Premier League, while Chelsea stayed fourth.

There was also concern for Spurs when James Maddison, making his first start in 18 months, was forced off injured early in the second half. But on a night when the result mattered most, Tottenham’s rare Stamford Bridge triumph will live long in the memory.
