Sunderland Stay Bottom After Goalless Draw With Leeds at Stadium of Light

Sunderland remain bottom of the Premier League after a goalless draw with Leeds United in difficult conditions at the Stadium of Light. The point ends a run of four straight league defeats for Regis Le Bris’ side, but extends their winless run in the top flight to six matches.

Sunderland 0-0 Leeds: Storm Boelo makes its mark

The match was played as Storm Boelo brought powerful gusts across northern England, with Sunderland under an amber wind warning until 9pm on Sunday. The club confirmed just over four hours before kick-off that the fixture would go ahead, advising supporters to take extra care on their journeys — and the conditions made their presence felt throughout, with neither side ever really finding a rhythm.

Chances were in short supply, with just four shots on target apiece. Brian Brobbey, featuring for the first time since September 20, came closest for Sunderland in the first half, racing through on goal only for James Trafford to smother his effort. He nearly profited from a backpass held up in the wind too, but Trafford was equal to that as well.

Leeds climb to seventh as Sunderland stay bottom

Leeds, who had lost just once all season under Daniel Farke, started striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin despite the manager admitting he had been a doubt before kick-off. The decision almost paid off when Calvert-Lewin went down in the area after Ao Tanaka’s shot was saved, but VAR decided there was not enough in it to award a penalty.

Late on, former Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, greeted by boos on his return to Wearside, was twice denied — Robin Roefs tipping one effort wide before another was blocked on the line. The draw takes Leeds up to seventh, while Sunderland stay rooted to the foot of the table on five points, still searching for a first win in six.
