The light novel series first debuted in November 2019 under Kadokawa’s MF Bunko J imprint, with illustrations by Umibōzu. It went on to win the 15th MF Bunko J newcomer award in 2019, and Kadokawa published the 14th volume on Friday, October 24.
The Detective Is Already Dead Novels End After a Six-Year Run
The story follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man who has always been a magnet for trouble, stumbling across murder scenes and mysterious cases. His life changes when he meets Siesta, a brilliant detective fighting a secret war against an organization of pseudohumans, and becomes her assistant on a globe-trotting adventure. That adventure, however, ended a year before the main story begins, leaving Kimihiko to return to an ordinary life haunted by what he lost.
Yen Press publishes the novels in English and describes the series as beginning “without its hero,” a premise that set it apart from typical detective stories. The publisher shipped the 12th novel in English on August 11, 2026.
Anime, Manga and Spinoffs Keep the Franchise Alive
The franchise has grown well beyond the novels. The anime’s first season premiered with a one-hour special in July 2021 and ran for 12 episodes, with Funimation streaming it alongside an English dub. The second season debuted on October 7, 2026, and Crunchyroll is streaming it as it airs.
A manga adaptation by Mugiko ran in Kadokawa’s Monthly Comic Alive magazine from May 2020 to October 2023, ending with six compiled volumes. A spinoff novel, Charlotte wa Tada, Jiken o Tokitai. Tantei wa Mō, Shindeiru. Code:RED, launched in May 2024 with nigozyu credited for the original work and as supervisor.
With the 15th volume now confirmed as the last, fans have one more book to find out how Kimihiko and Siesta’s story finally closes.
