Joy Behar Returns to 'The View' After Nearly a Month Away: 'I Dislocated My Shoulder' and the Pain Was 'Worse Than Childbirth'

Joy Behar returned to “The View” on Tuesday, October 27, after nearly a month away from the ABC talk show, revealing that a backstage fall left her with a dislocated shoulder and pain she described as “worse than childbirth.” The 84-year-old comedian, who last appeared on the show on September 30, received a standing ovation as she retook her seat at the Hot Topics table.

Behar walked out to Elton John’s “The Bitch Is Back,” joking, “You should’ve played ‘God Save the Queen.'” She told the audience, “I fell bad. I went down in this building,” and explained the injury plainly: “I dislocated my shoulder. I don’t know if that’s ever happened to anybody [here], but that’s worse than childbirth.”

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg confirmed she actually heard Behar being injured backstage. Sara Haines sat alongside Behar at the table, while Alyssa Farah Griffin declared, “She’s back!” Behar grew serious for a moment, telling the audience and staff, “I missed you all very much. All the people who work here are so divine.”

The View Denies Firing Rumors Around Behar’s Absence

Behar’s absence had fueled speculation about her future on the panel, including a report that producers wanted to fire her as part of a shake-up. A representative for the show told Entertainment Weekly there is “no truth” to that report, and executive producer Brian Teta announced her return on the October 26 edition of the “Behind the Table” podcast, saying, “Joy is back. We’ve missed her. We’ll see you tomorrow!”

Behar, an original co-host since the show debuted in 1997, recently became the longest-running female host of an American television program. She had earlier relayed a message through Goldberg about her recovery, joking that if she were still 21 she would have bounced back the next day — but “since I’m an old bat, recuperating takes a bit longer.” She also promised to fill viewers in on “all the gory details” upon her return, and on Tuesday she did just that.
