Matthew Lillard Calls His Mystery Superman 2 Character 'A Very James Gunn Moment' Ahead of Man of Tomorrow

Matthew Lillard has teased his mystery role in Superman 2: Man of Tomorrow, calling his character “a very James Gunn moment” — and hinting fans will not find him in the comics.

Lillard, known to DC fans from his role in Daredevil: Born Again, is joining James Gunn’s DC Universe for the Superman sequel. While his character has not been officially announced, his latest comments strongly suggest he will play an original creation rather than an established comic book figure.

Matthew Lillard’s Superman 2 Character Is an Original, Not a Comic Figure

Speaking on a promotional tour for Prime Video’s adaptation of Carrie, Lillard was asked whether comic fans would recognise his character. His answer was short but telling.

“It’s a very James Gunn moment,” Lillard told The Direct. “So, I wouldn’t worry too much about finding him in the comics.”

The comment effectively rules out fan theories linking Lillard to existing DC characters. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn had already shot down speculation that Lillard would play the DCU’s Barry Allen, and the actor’s own words now point firmly toward an original role.

Gunn has a track record of inventing new characters for his DC projects, including Amanda Waller’s daughter and Mister Handsome, so an original Lillard character would fit the pattern.

Man of Tomorrow Cast, Plot and July 9, 2027 Release Date

Man of Tomorrow sees David Corenswet return as Superman, forming an uneasy alliance with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor against the villain Brainiac. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, with Skyler Gisondo back as Jimmy Olsen, alongside wider DCU faces including Blue Beetle and the Justice Gang.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Gunn also recently dismissed rumors that Milly Alcock had been fired as Supergirl, telling fans to stop listening to baseless claims.
