Steve Maclin has revealed the surprising way he found out he would face Adam Copeland in the main event of MLP Northern Rising — and it was his wife who broke the news to him.

Maclin faced Copeland in a Street Fight that headlined the Maple Leaf Pro event, with Copeland ultimately picking up the win. But as Maclin explained in an interview with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, the match almost never happened the way fans saw it.
Steve Maclin Was Originally Booked in the Monsters Ball Match
Maclin revealed he was originally set to compete in a four-way Monsters Ball match on the card. That plan changed when Copeland himself approached Maclin’s wife backstage with the news.
“I actually got told by my wife,” Maclin said. “Originally I was supposed to be in the four-way Monsters Ball match and then my wife’s calling me and she’s like, ‘Hey, Adam just came up to me and said, ‘Hey, it’s me and your husband.’”
Maclin admitted he could barely believe it at first. “Instantly in my head, I’m like, ‘Get out of here, no way.’ You have no idea how the little kid in me is just smiling from ear to ear,” he said.
Maclin Calls Facing Adam Copeland a Dream Match
For Maclin, the match was the fulfillment of a lifelong wrestling dream. He described Copeland as a legend from the Attitude Era he grew up watching, and said stepping into the ring with him was everything he had ever wanted as a professional wrestler.
“Hell yeah, this is everything as a pro wrestler that I’ve always wanted, to get into the ring with a legend like this from the era that I grew up watching,” Maclin said. “You want to go out there and prove yourself.”
Maclin also discussed breaking his leg ten weeks before the match elsewhere in the interview, and fans can watch the two-part documentary on his road to Northern Rising on the Boots To Boots YouTube channel.
