Orange Cassidy has shared the gloriously low-budget origin story behind his wrestling career: after watching his first live show, he went home and built a wrestling ring in his backyard. The AEW star told the story in a new interview with Show Me St Louis, explaining that a single night at the matches was enough to hook him for life.

Orange Cassidy’s Backyard Ring Origin Story

Cassidy is one of the most distinctive performers in modern wrestling. His laid-back, so-called sloth style looks nothing like anyone else in or out of the ring, and it has made him a staple of AEW programming since the company launched in 2019. His career now spans more than 22 years in the ring.

But it started with a simple reaction to seeing wrestling on television and then in person. As Cassidy put it, he watched it on TV, thought it looked cool, and decided he could do it himself. After attending a show in person, he was hooked, and the backyard ring followed.

His opponents in those early days were whoever was willing to step in: neighborhood friends and anyone who wanted to fight him in a ring built from scraps of wood. It was DIY wrestling in the purest sense, with no training school polish and no budget, just enthusiasm and timber.

From Backyard Scraps to AEW Mainstay

The story is a reminder of how far Cassidy’s act has travelled. The same performer who once wrestled friends in a homemade ring is now one of AEW’s most recognizable stars, with a character built around doing as little as possible while somehow winning anyway.

That contrast is part of why the story lands with fans. Wrestling origin stories often involve gyms, tryouts and years of training, and Cassidy certainly put in the years. But his version starts with a kid, a backyard and a ring held together by scraps, and it ends, more than two decades later, with him still doing it.

As he summed it up in the interview: he saw wrestling, decided he could do it, built the ring, and never really stopped. All this time later, the backyard experiment is still going, just on much bigger stages.
