Grayson Waller has admitted he was “100%” certain his WWE release was coming earlier this year — and the fear drove him to reinvent himself as NXT Champion. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Waller revealed just how close he felt to the chopping block.

Grayson Waller: “I Could Feel” the Release Coming After New Day Left
The turning point came in early May, when New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) announced their departure from WWE. Waller had been aligned with the duo on television, and when they left — right after Oba Femi destroyed him on the April 21 episode of Raw — the writing seemed on the wall.
“100%. I could feel it, especially when the New Day left,” Waller said. “I could feel it because when the New Day left, Oba destroyed me. He’s a very big man, very strong… Maybe I wasn’t prepared enough for Oba Femi, but then when I didn’t do anything for like another month, was not a great position to be in.”
“I’m smart enough to know; I’m not going to pretend. I’m real enough to know. I know I have a lot of value to the company, but in that position, there’s other people who could also add that value. So I had to do something because I’m not going to sit back and let my dream disappear.”
NXT Return Saves Waller’s WWE Career
Waller vanished from WWE TV after the Raw loss, resurfacing in NXT at the end of July — calling out the roster, airing his grievances, and launching the run that made him NXT Champion. He is set to defend the title against Tony D’Angelo at NXT Halloween Havoc.
It’s a remarkable turnaround: from expecting a pink slip to holding championship gold in under six months.
