Curry Barker Pitched Nathan Fielder a Collaboration

‘Obsession’ director Curry Barker has pitched a collaboration to Nathan Fielder after watching ‘You Can See Everything’, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary Fielder co-directed with Lance Oppenheim. Barker revealed the reach-out Thursday night at the Time100 Next Gala at Pier59 Studios, telling Variety: “I put it out in the water.”

Curry Barker Calls ‘You Can See Everything’ “Freakin’ Insane and Awesome”

Barker, the 27-year-old filmmaker who got his start on YouTube before his Gen Z-focused horror hit ‘Obsession’ stormed the box office earlier this year, said he went into Fielder’s film knowing little about the Theranos saga. “I thought it was freakin’ insane and awesome,” he said. “I didn’t know much about [Elizabeth Holmes’] story.”

His praise is the latest sign of how thoroughly ‘You Can See Everything’ has consumed the industry conversation. The A24 documentary — a 174-minute portrait of Holmes filmed during her final month of freedom before reporting to federal prison — opened in select US theaters on October 16 and has already pulled in an estimated $46 million in three weeks, landing among the top 50 highest-rated films on Letterboxd.

An Awards-Season Collision Course

The timing makes a Barker-Fielder pairing even more intriguing. Both filmmakers are riding parallel awards campaigns: A24 is reportedly campaigning Amanda Seyfried — who portrayed Holmes in the film’s scripted reenactments — for Best Supporting Actress as part of an 11-category Oscars submission, while Barker’s ‘Obsession’ has its own momentum with Inde Navarrette considered a lock for a Best Actress nod.

Barker isn’t the only director circling Fielder’s orbit this week — he also released his new horror short ‘Mama Bear’, written, directed and edited by Barker and available free on the That’s a Bad Idea YouTube channel, reuniting him with ‘Obsession’ production designer Vivian Gray.

Whether Fielder — whose deadpan documentary about the most infamous fraudster in Silicon Valley history keeps bending the reality it documents — takes Barker up on the pitch remains to be seen. But a collaboration between the man who made ‘Nathan for You’ and the horror phenom of the year would be one of the most unpredictable pairings in recent memory.
