Curry Barker, writer and director of the brilliantly twisted horror hit Obsession, is releasing a new short film on YouTube on October 29 — just in time for Halloween.

Obsession Director’s New Short Film Mama Bear Release Date
Barker shared the news on Instagram along with the short’s title: Mama Bear. The project appears to be tied to some sort of Microsoft Windows partnership, but the title strongly suggests a link to Obsession rather than a straightforward ad.
Fans of Obsession will immediately spot the connection. The film’s lead character is Baron “Bear” Bailey, a young man living in a house he inherited from his grandmother, with his parents notably absent from the story. A short titled Mama Bear could explore Bear’s early life — or his mother’s reaction to the shocking events at the end of the film.
Could Mama Bear Lead to Obsession 2?
Barker has already spoken openly about wanting to continue the Obsession story. In interviews, he has floated the idea of a direct sequel, or something even more ambitious: an anthology series where each one-hour episode follows a different wish going completely off the rails, with Barker directing the pilot alongside the original director of photography and other filmmakers invited to put their own spin on later episodes.
Obsession was a remarkable success story. Made on a budget of somewhere between $600,000 and $750,000, it raked in $520 million worldwide, picked up a string of awards, and scored highly with both critics and audiences. A Halloween short arriving at the height of that buzz looks like a smart way to keep the world of Obsession alive — and to test the waters for whatever Barker does next.
