Paul Heyman has admitted he “violated” his contract with WCW to secretly get Mark Calloway into a meeting with Vince McMahon — the meeting that led to the creation of The Undertaker. Speaking on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Heyman revealed he was the WCW insider who betrayed the company.
The Undertaker signed with WWE in October 1990 after finishing a one-year stint with WCW, and went on to become one of wrestling’s biggest supernatural characters of all time.

Heyman Saw Undertaker’s Talent When WCW Didn’t
Heyman recalled meeting Mark Calloway in May 1990, when he returned to WCW after being fired. WCW’s creative boss Ole Anderson had no faith in the big man — Heyman recalled Anderson calling him “just some big red-headed stepchild son of a bitch that’s never going to draw any money.”
“I could not have disagreed with him any more,” Heyman said. When Calloway’s contract came up in September 1990 and WCW tried to lowball him, Heyman made his move.
How The Undertaker Got His WWE Meeting
“There was someone in WCW that violated their contract with Turner Broadcasting and WCW and snuck Mark into a meeting through a mutual friend… into the meeting with Vince McMahon,” Heyman explained. “That meeting led to Mark being signed by WWE and becoming The Undertaker. It was a WCW person that betrayed the company to do that.”
Asked what he thought of it at the time, Heyman smiled: “I thought it was great because I was that person.” His reasoning: “WCW did not see any talent in him and I saw an enormous talent that was about to be wasted. It would have been squandering one of the greatest talents in the history of this business.”
