Young Americans plot

From writers and executive producers Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe, the show’s logline reads: As the children of the nation’s elite battle it out at Capitol Crest Academy in Washington, D.C., their teenage dramas begin to mirror the larger political games of their parents. Amid secrets, scandals, and deadly ambitions, a forbidden romance between two students from opposing political families threatens to escalate tensions to a breaking point.

The Hulu connection

Leite’s hiring reunites her with Bruce Miller, the Emmy-winning creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, who executive produces Young Americans. With a director of that pedigree and a cast stacked with rising talent, the pilot is shaping up as one of Hulu’s most closely watched bets.

Why the pilot is worth watching

The premise has a proven formula behind it: elite teenagers, political parents, and a forbidden romance between students from opposing political families — the kind of setup that has powered prestige teen dramas for decades. But the Washington, D.C. setting and the promise that the students’ drama will mirror their parents’ political games give “Young Americans” a distinctly capital-flavored edge.

Between Leite’s prestige-TV credentials, Miller’s executive-producer backing, and a cast mixing veterans like Scott Foley with rising names, Hulu is clearly positioning the pilot as a potential franchise starter. Pilots with this much talent attached rarely stay quiet for long.
