“Ah Girl” follows a seven-year-old girl in 1990s Singapore whose parents have separated, watching her navigate big emotions she has no language for. Ang workshopped the project at the festival’s Southeast Asian Film Lab back in 2015, and the film went on to take the Youth Jury Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Ang, an alumna of the Busan Asian Film Academy, previously won the Singapore Short Film Awards’ best short film prize for her 2012 short “Broken Crayon.” The feature stars nine-year-old Ong Xuan Jing, whose performance already earned her Best Actress honors at the Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Young Cinema Competition and the Malaysia International Film Festival.

Shahrbanoo Sadat Wins Best Director for No Good Men

The director prize went to Shahrbanoo Sadat for “No Good Men” (Kabul Jan), a Germany-France-Norway-Denmark-Afghanistan co-production. Set in Kabul on the eve of the Taliban’s return, the film follows a tenacious camerawoman whose career, relationships, family and freedom are thrown into uncertainty.

The 37th SGIFF, running from October 21 to November 1, also honored Indian cinema icon Aamir Khan with its Screen Icon Award and Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-eda with the Cinema Honorary Award.
