Premier League legend Alan Shearer has opened up about his 260-goal scoring record, his punditry career on Match of the Day and managerial jobs that almost happened, in a wide-ranging sit-down with Kelly Somers on BBC’s The Football Interview.
Shearer remains the only player to have passed 250 Premier League goals, and his record — set across 14 seasons with Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United — still stands as the benchmark every striker is measured against.

Alan Shearer: Will The Premier League Record Ever Be Broken?
The 260-goal tally has survived for two decades, but Erling Haaland is the one active player circling it — and Shearer addressed the Norwegian’s chase directly. He said the record will fall eventually, but admitted he hopes Haaland departs for a foreign league before he gets there. Only Harry Kane’s 213 goals and Wayne Rooney’s 208 have even come close to the mark.
Shearer also reflected on where it all began: leaving Newcastle for Southampton as a teenager, the £3.6 million move to Blackburn in 1992 and firing the 34 goals in 1994-95 that powered Rovers to the Premier League title. His world-record £15 million return home to Newcastle in 1996 then produced three straight Golden Boots — and club-icon status.
Newcastle Manager Stint, Cardiff Brush And MOTD Life
The interview also dug into the pressure of becoming Newcastle manager in 2009 — eight games, an unsuccessful fight against relegation — and a near-miss with Cardiff that never progressed to a formal contract. Off the pitch, Shearer spoke about punditry, his charity work, and the pure joy of watching Newcastle win the League Cup in 2025, the club’s first trophy in his lifetime.
For any fan of the record man himself, this is well worth a listen.
