Ian Gillan Hospitalized, Deep Purple Cancels Weekend Shows

Deep Purple announced they are unable to perform as scheduled tonight at the QI Arena in Leipzig and tomorrow evening at the Sporthalle in Hamburg, writing: “This comes as a result of a medical emergency involving Ian Gillan, which has resulted in his current hospitalisation.”

The announcement expressed “great disappointment” from the band, which is currently on the road in Germany. No timeline for Gillan’s recovery or whether further tour dates will be affected has been shared yet.

Who Is Ian Gillan

Ian Gillan is one of rock music’s most iconic voices, fronting Deep Purple — the band behind classics like “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star” — since 1969. His soaring vocals helped define the hard rock and heavy metal sound of the 1970s, and he also famously sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar.

At 81, Gillan has remained an active touring performer with Deep Purple, continuing to deliver the high-octane shows that made the band one of rock’s most enduring live acts.

Fans and fellow musicians are expected to share well-wishes as the band awaits updates on the singer’s condition. More information about the cancelled shows and potential rescheduled dates should follow in the coming days.
