Manchester United are a mess — and ESPN’s latest Transfer Talk roundup, the “Man United meltdown edition,” is asking exactly which players have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months. With the club deep in crisis, the rumor mill around United is running hotter than ever.
The short answer: the names on United’s radar are familiar, but the club’s self-imposed wage-structure discipline keeps complicating every deal.
Man United Transfer Targets: Elliot Anderson, Gibbs-White, Stiller
United’s midfield remains the biggest area of need, and the shortlist is well documented: Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller. But reports have noted United have real concerns about meeting the wage demands of targets like Anderson and Gibbs-White without breaking the wage structure INEOS has been carefully trimming.
The more affordable route may be Stiller, with ESPN journalist Mark Ogden suggesting the Stuttgart deep-lying playmaker — reportedly valued around €50 million — could be the most plausible January arrival if United cash in on fringe players. Anderson, Wharton and Baleba are all believed to be valued north of £100 million by their clubs.
The Ones That Got Away: Mateus Fernandes to Spurs
United’s discipline has already cost them one target. According to ESPN’s Rob Dawson, United pushed hard for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes but walked away rather than match Tottenham’s £85m club-record offer — and without being fully convinced the player wanted Old Trafford. Last summer, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were said to be desperate to join, and United clearly want that same level of commitment from targets.
With Casemiro on the way out and Manuel Ugarte injured, the need for reinforcements is only growing — the meltdown edition may yet have more chapters.
