European champion and two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean has died at the age of 34 after a battle with cancer. A statement on her social media said she lost her battle with cancer at 6.30am this morning, surrounded by her loved ones — a devastating end for one of Ireland’s finest middle-distance runners.
The announcement described her as “a beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many,” adding that she will be deeply missed. Mageean, from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, revealed in July last year that she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Ciara Mageean’s Career: European 1500m Gold and Irish Records
Mageean represented Ireland at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics and was forced to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Games because of an Achilles injury. Her career highlight came earlier that year, when she clinched the first major title of her career with 1500m gold at the European Championships in Rome — storming through a gap between two British rivals to win in 4:04.66.
An emotional Mageean said “words can’t even come close” to describing the feeling after sealing that title, a line that won her admirers for her honest and emotional post-race interviews.
A Trail of Records and Near-Misses
Her talent was obvious early: 1500m silvers at the 2010 World Junior Championships and 2011 European Junior Championships, followed by a frustrating run of injuries — ankle surgery in 2013 that cost her a shot at London 2012, and a calf injury that ruined her Tokyo campaign in 2021.
But 2022–23 was her peak. She won 1500m silver at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games (Birmingham 2022) behind Laura Muir, then beat Muir in Brussels with a stunning 3:56.63 — smashing Sonia O’Sullivan’s 27-year-old Irish record. In 2023 she also took over two seconds off O’Sullivan’s 29-year Irish mile record and was named BBC Northern Ireland Sports Personality of the Year.
