Inde Navarrette made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut on the Halloween episode — and the breakout moment of the night was a blood-soaked short film called “The Inventor’s Wife,” built around a robot named PD-44, aka “Petey”.
The Dan Bulla short film opens with Navarrette delivering a eulogy for her eccentric inventor husband, then going home to a house full of gadgets he built for her comfort. In his workshop, she finds a box with a letter and a robot inside. “It’s just me and you, buddy,” she says. (Image Credits: SNL/NBC via Variety)
The Inventor’s Wife SNL Sketch Explained
Six years later, the widow is back on the dating scene. She brings home a date (played by Ben Marshall) — and Petey does what it was built to do: rips off the man’s penis and blows him up. That’s when she finally gets it: the robot’s name, PD-44, stands for “Penis Destroyer.”
Covered in blood, she delivers the closing beat: “He did love me. My husband did love me after all.”
Inde Navarrette’s SNL Halloween Debut
The Halloween episode followed a rocky cold open crashed by Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins, and an opening monologue where Navarrette — soon to debut in the MCU as Rogue in X-Men — took a swipe at Shane Gillis over his sexist remarks during his own recent monologue. Musical guest Gracie Abrams made her SNL debut the same night.
Between the Marvel-shaped monologue and a robot with a very specific job description, Navarrette’s first SNL hosting gig gave the Halloween show its signature gross-out moment.
