Anthropic Warns It Is ‘Very Close’ to RSI Capability — AI That Can Build Itself

Anthropic has warned that it is on the cusp of creating a model capable of recursive self-improvement (RSI) — the point at which AI becomes so good at training itself that it triggers a dramatic acceleration of AI capabilities. The disclosure came buried in the fine print of the lab’s revised S-1A filing on Monday, alongside updated financials showing soaring revenue — and soaring expenses.

In the filing’s Risk Factors section, Anthropic said its internal estimates indicate it “may imminently meet” its Responsible Scaling Policy’s definition of “dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI.” Crucially, the company stressed that none of its current models have crossed that threshold yet. What Is RSI Capability in AI?

RSI is the point where AI reliably uses itself to improve, potentially spawning capabilities far beyond what humans can control or fully understand. To AI pessimists, it represents a cataclysm from which there is no return; to enthusiasts, it is the technology’s ultimate promise of unimaginable productivity and scientific discovery.

Anthropic seems to believe RSI is both promise and peril. “Using AI to help build more capable AI could also pose a considerable safety risk, particularly if it sharply accelerates the pace of progress,” the filing warns — adding that the company has in the past not identified a significant acceleration in its rate of development until after it had occurred.

Anthropic Promises Humans Stay in Control

The lab said it is considering updates to its Responsible Scaling Policy to keep humans in control of frontier model development, and does not anticipate being able to safely use Claude to fully autonomously design and build successive generations of frontier models without meaningful human supervision.

Skeptics will note an S-1 functions as both disclosure and marketing — and that claims of nearing self-building AI could fall into the latter camp. Still, with Claude’s capabilities in coding, math and cybersecurity growing in leaps and bounds this year, Anthropic’s warning is worth taking seriously.
