Moments after the episode’s emotional childbirth storyline, the camera cut back to New York, where two gentlemen were seen crossing the street from Agnes and Ada’s side to the Russell’s side. Those men were Damon and Letterman, dressed in full Gilded Age garb. Damon wore a top hat, a white shirt with an ascot, tucked into a long coat with slacks, plus sideburns and a fuzzy mustache. Letterman kept his familiar beard, pairing it with a bowler hat and an all-black ensemble.
Matt Damon and David Letterman’s Gilded Age Cameo Explained
Neither star had any lines, and they appeared in just a single scene, making this one of the quickest celebrity drop-ins in recent prestige TV memory. The cameo arrives at a moment when Damon is coming off the summer’s biggest blockbuster season and Letterman remains a late-night TV legend, which made their silent period-dressed appearance even more surreal for viewers.
What Else Happened in The Gilded Age Season 4 Episode 1
The premiere, titled “Ring the Bells,” opened in England with Duchess Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) surviving a harrowing childbirth. Back in New York, George Russell (Morgan Spector) battled business threats from President Cleveland’s anti-monopoly push while hunting his shooter, and Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) married Enid Winterton (Kelley Curran).
The Gilded Age Season 4 will run for eight episodes, airing weekly on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
