Love is back on the menu in old New York. In The Gilded Age Season 4 premiere, Marian Brooke (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry Russell (Harry Richardson) spent the night together, reigniting the romance that ended their engagement last season. Spoilers ahead.

The episode, titled “Ring the Bells,” opened with Oscar van Rhijn’s (Blake Ritson) wedding to Enid Winterton (Kelley Curran), Bertha’s former maid. After leaving the older folks at the reception, the newest Mrs. van Rhijn recruited Marian, Oscar, and a few others for a little after-hours fun downtown.
How Marian and Larry’s ‘One Night Shift’ Happened
Marian had been persuaded to go to a brothel bar, where she ran straight into her former fiance, Larry. He ribbed her for previously saying she would never be caught at a party like that, a callback to their Season 3 argument over Larry’s visit to a house of ill repute with Jack Trotter, after he had told Marian he was going somewhere else.
From jokes to dancing alongside Oscar and Enid, the night softened into something more. Larry left with Marian to get her home safely in the rain, but a little incident forced the former couple to take cover at a local hotel, where they became lovers.
Morning After: Marian Panics, Larry Is Stunned
In the morning, Marian freaked out about what spending the night together could mean for her reputation and rushed home. Larry, beside himself, could do nothing about it. For a character who has been unlucky in love throughout the series, the premiere suggests Marian’s luck may be changing, even if she is not ready to admit it.
The Gilded Age Season 4 airs weekly on HBO, streaming on HBO Max, with eight episodes planned.
