Sony Is Offering Up to $400 to Buy Back Your PS5 Console and Two Controllers

Sony is offering $400 to people willing to part ways with their PS5 and two controllers. As spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror, PlayStation is sending notifications to fans with the PlayStation app on their phones, offering to trade in the console with money sent directly to their bank account. The offer is valued at up to $400 for anyone with a standard PS5 and two controllers. While trade-in programs are common at retailers like GameStop — especially around the holidays — it is unusual to see a platform holder reach out to customers directly like this.

Why Is Sony Buying Back PS5 Consoles?

It may suggest that Sony is preparing for a hardware shortage, or that it wants pre-owned stock it can sell at a more affordable price than a brand-new unit. PS5 consoles currently cost $600-$650 depending on whether you get a disc drive, while the PS5 Pro costs $900 — and demand for the Pro in the lead-up to GTA 6’s release has made it hard to find at retail price.

Resellers and even retailers like GameStop have been selling used PS5 Pros for as much as $1,400.

Is the PS5 Buyback Deal Worth It?

For anyone who bought a PS5 before prices began to jump and no longer uses it, this is not a terrible deal. The console initially cost $500, so getting $400 back — provided you also picked up an additional controller at some point — is a solid trade-in value. At this point in the PS4’s life cycle, you would not have gotten anywhere near $400 back from a retailer like GameStop.
