Jon Rahm has explained his exit from LIV Golf: he simply did not like where the breakaway series was heading. The two-time major winner said he “wasn’t willing to follow” the league’s plans for LIV 2.0.

Jon Rahm LIV Golf Exit Explained
“As much as I liked the project and the idea of LIV 1.0, I wasn’t thrilled with the changes they were doing to 2.0 and I just wasn’t willing to follow that path,” said the 31-year-old Spaniard. “There were too many unknowns at the time. It seemed like it was going a bit away from team golf. It became more of a regular tournament.”
The league’s future is deeply uncertain. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing in April — after investing more than $5bn — and LIV filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States in September. The circuit has since secured a possible $300m in financing to try to push ahead with LIV 2.0, but Rahm reached a separation agreement to secure his exit in October.
Could Jon Rahm Return to the PGA Tour?
Rahm left the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf in December 2023 in a deal reportedly worth $300m, and ESPN reported he was owed about $100m from the remainder of the contract when he left.
Brooks Koepka has already returned to the PGA Tour, which rewrote its rules in December to allow him back subject to sanctions including a $5m charitable donation. The returning member programme closed on February 2 with Rahm still under long-term contract, but he struck a deal with the DP World Tour in May to retain his membership and stay eligible for next year’s Ryder Cup.
On a possible PGA Tour return, Rahm said: “Brooks was able to go back through certain circumstances. I don’t know if the possibility of that would be open for me or not. But if I have to fulfil a one-year suspension, I think it’s a pretty good position to be that a worst-case scenario I get to play on a wonderful tour for a whole year.” He added that if he were offered the same penalties as Koepka, “I probably would do it, yes.”
