Mike Flanagan has revealed his creative approach for the hotly-anticipated The Dark Tower TV series — and it’s exactly what fans of Stephen King’s epic fantasy saga want to hear. The showrunner says his adaptation would be “remarkably faithful” to the books.
Flanagan — best known for Netflix horror hits The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, and most recently Amazon’s Carrie — has been trying to get a Dark Tower adaptation off the ground for years, despite the fact that his Season 1 script already has King’s seal of approval.
The Hardest Green Light of His Career
Actually getting the series made remains the real battle. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in the summer, Flanagan called The Dark Tower “one of the most complicated properties to get started,” admitting: “Getting the green light on Dark Tower is a much longer and more involved process than anything else I’ve ever approached in my life.”
The Dark Tower spans eight novels published between 1982 and 2012, following the Gunslinger Roland Deschain across a multiverse-spanning quest to save the tower at the center of all reality. The saga is one of King’s most beloved and famously complex works — and notoriously hard to adapt. The 2017 film starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey compressed the story into a single movie and was widely panned by fans.
A Faithful Take Fans Deserve
Flanagan’s promise of a remarkably faithful take is music to the ears of Tower junkies, who have waited nearly a decade for a proper adaptation. Given his track record of reverent, character-driven horror — and King’s own blessing on the scripts — the series remains one of the most anticipated projects in genre television.
