Will Ospreay is standing behind his creation. The AEW World Champion took to social media after WrestleDream 2026 to thank fans and the company for backing his bold new concept, saying he’s proud of himself for “daring to try something new” with the first-ever Clockwork Carnage match.

The match was Ospreay’s own brainchild — a hybrid of the Casino Gauntlet and the Ironman match — and he headlined it himself. Entering at number one, he survived all comers: Adam Copeland, Darby Allin, Ricochet, Konosuke Takeshita, Kazuchika Okada, Samoa Joe, and “Speedball” Mike Bailey.

A Buzzer-Beater Ending

After an elimination stage that saw Bailey fall to Takeshita and Takeshita fall to Okada’s Rainmaker, the final six battled through a 15-minute scoring period where every pin counted. The finish was pure drama: Copeland stormed back with two late spears to tie at the top of the leaderboard, crawled on top of Okada for what looked like the winning pin — and got caught by Ospreay’s Hidden Blade for the decisive three-count with mere seconds left on the clock.

Ospreay finished with 3 points; Copeland, Joe, and Allin ended on 2. It was, in every sense, a buzzer-beater title defense.

Cope Wants the Gold

The story isn’t over. After the match, Adam Copeland shook Ospreay’s hand, pulled the champion close, and appeared to tell him: “I want that.” Copeland recently announced that 2027 will be his final year as a full-time in-ring competitor — and his post-match exchange suggests one last run at the world title is very much the plan. Ospreay, for his part, has already asked Copeland to save him a date during that retirement tour.

Ospreay’s social media message captured the night’s sentiment: gratitude toward AEW and Tony Khan for putting faith in “something that’s not been done before,” and pride in gambling on an idea no other company had tried. With a brand-new match concept, a clean title defense, and a looming showdown with a WWE Hall of Famer on his way out, the Aerial Assassin’s reign is only getting more interesting.
