British cinema’s coming-of-age scene has a new name on the horizon: “The State of Us”, the debut feature from directors Jake Harvey and Ollie Gardner, has landed a U.K. theatrical deal with Vertigo Releasing and is set to hit cinemas in 2027.
The comedy stars Samuel Bottomley (“California Schemin'”, “How To Have Sex”) alongside Callum Scott Howells (“Madfabulous”, “It’s a Sin”). (“The State of Us” / Credits: Variety)
Festival Buzz
The film made its world premiere in main competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year, and the Vertigo acquisition news arrives just ahead of Monday’s screening at the Rome Film Festival — a sign of growing international interest in the young filmmakers’ debut.
Ones to Watch
For Harvey and Gardner, this is a dream start: a feature debut that premieres in competition at Edinburgh, picks up a respected U.K. distributor, and now heads to Rome. Bottomley and Howells are also names to keep an eye on — both have built strong credits on both sides of the camera in British TV and film.
With its 2027 theatrical release locked in, “The State of Us” is officially one for British film fans to watch.
