SPFL Invites Bids for New Scottish Premiership TV Deal From 2029-30 Season

The future of Scottish football on TV is officially up for grabs. The SPFL has invited broadcasters to bid for the UK rights to show Scottish Premiership matches from the 2029-30 season, with the league’s bosses expecting “strong interest” in one of Europe’s most exciting national competitions.

The current broadcast arrangement sees Sky Sports holding the rights under a five-year, £150 million agreement that lets the broadcaster air up to 60 games per season. That deal began last term and runs until the end of the 2028-29 campaign. Premier Sports also shows up to 22 top-flight fixtures per season under a separate deal.

SPFL Flexible on How Many Games Go Live

The league says it is “flexible about the number of games that it shows live in future,” opening the door to a bigger or reshaped broadcast package when the new rights cycle kicks in. That flexibility could be a major draw for streaming platforms and broadcasters looking to expand their football portfolios.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster framed the tender as vital to the financial health of the game north of the border: “Securing strong broadcast partnerships is an essential element in maintaining a balanced and sustainable income mix for the SPFL and its clubs. We anticipate strong interest from broadcasters in what is widely recognised as one of Europe’s most exciting national league competitions.”

League Cup Deal Unaffected

While the Premiership rights are being re-tendered, the SPFL confirmed that its separate contract with Premier Sports covering broadcast and sponsorship rights for the Scottish League Cup remains in place until at least the end of the 2030-31 season and will not be affected by this announcement.

With the current deal still having over two full seasons to run, the early tender gives broadcasters plenty of runway — and gives Scottish clubs a reason to be optimistic about what comes next.
