Awards Season Heats Up: Turturro's 97% Fresh Pickpocket Leads Weekend Indie Slate

Awards season officially heats up this weekend as a wave of specialty films hits theaters — led by John Turturro‘s acclaimed turn in The Only Living Pickpocket In New York, alongside star vehicles for Olivia Colman and Helen Mirren.

Sony Pictures Classics is opening The Only Living Pickpocket In New York in limited release across six screens in New York and Los Angeles. Turturro plays Harry Lehman, an aging pickpocket plying his trade with ever-diminishing returns in a drastically changed New York.

The film marks the directorial debut of Noah Segan and co-stars Steve Buscemi as Harry’s regular fence, Tatiana Maslany as his estranged daughter, and Will Price as the scion of a Manhattan crime family. A Sundance favorite, the movie is Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh at 97%, and Turturro already collected the Zurich Film Festival’s Golden Eye Award for his performance.

Also in theaters: Olivia Colman and Peter Dinklage headline Wicker, a comic fable featuring Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd; Helen Mirren leads A Talent For Murder; and Sandra Hüller plays alongside Hans Zischler as Thomas Mann’s daughter in Fatherland. The A24 phenomenon You Can See Everything expands wide this weekend as well.

Awards Season Battle Begins

With the prestige corridor now in full swing, these performances are positioning themselves for the coming awards race. Turturro’s quiet, heartstring-tugging lead turn in Pickpocket — called “mesmerizing” by critics — looks like the one to watch as the Oscar conversation takes shape.
