Still resizing images in a photo editor, retyping text you can’t copy, or opening file after file just to find the right one? PowerToys — Microsoft’s free collection of 30+ utilities — can do all of that for you in seconds. Here are six tools worth turning on today.
Install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store, open PowerToys Settings, and enable the features you want. Most take seconds to learn.

1. FancyZones — Custom Window Layouts
Stop dragging window edges into place. FancyZones lets you create custom snap layouts for your desktop — perfect for ultrawide and multi-monitor setups where Windows’ default snapping falls short. Open the layout editor in PowerToys Settings, pick a preset or design your own, then hold Shift while dragging a window to snap it into a zone.
2. Text Extractor — Copy Text From Anywhere on Screen
Skip the OCR website or retyping. Press Win + Shift + T, drag over any text on your screen, and PowerToys copies it straight to your clipboard. It works on screenshots, paused videos, and scanned pages — just proofread the result, since blurry text can trip it up.
3. Advanced Paste — Paste Smarter
Copying is easy; formatting is the chore. Copy something, press Win + Shift + V, and choose how it pastes: plain text, Markdown, JSON, or even convert the content into a .txt, .html, or .png file.
These three alone can claw back real minutes from every workday — and with 30+ tools in the box, there’s plenty more to explore once you have PowerToys running.
