Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Tips — 8 Things to Know Before You Play

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, and Infinity Ward has shaken up enough mechanics that even Call of Duty veterans need a refresher. We went hands-on with MW4 early, and here are the essential Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer tips to help you score wins from day one.

The biggest adjustment: omnimovement is gone. Modern Warfare 4 strips away the fancy omnimovement from the last two years of Treyarch’s Black Ops games. Instead, Infinity Ward has reworked the mantling system, refined sliding, and added the ability to climb pipes. Double-jumping into windows is no longer possible — but those copper-colored climbable pipes, which stand out easily on standard maps, Kill Block, and even the Zodiac Warzone map, open up routes you could never reach before.

Master Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Movement First

The best way to learn the new movement is the mobility course, found in the multiplayer playlist menu. It offers three difficulty tiers — beginner, intermediate, and expert — and completing it earns rewards. Run through it before you touch matchmaking; you’ll thank yourself later.

Another massive change: bloom is removed. The mechanic that previously caused bullet spread when hip-firing is gone, meaning hipfire is far more accurate in Modern Warfare 4. If someone slides around a corner at you, or you’re caught in a close-range gunfight, don’t waste time aiming down sights — just hipfire.

Settings, Gunsmith and the New Apex Attachments

Before playing, dig into the settings. MW4 defaults to cinematic-style visuals that hurt multiplayer visibility — disable motion blur and depth of field immediately. The game also includes accessibility options for movement assistance, aiming refinement, and even tinnitus and motion sickness support.

In the Gunsmith, you’ll meet the Gunny bot system, which recommends preset developer builds as you rank up. They’re decent, but not always optimal — experiment beyond them. The real star is the new Apex attachment type: every primary and secondary weapon has one, and these conversions (like the Oden’s attachment that turns the assault rifle into a powerful semi-auto sniper rifle, or one that fires throwing knives) don’t cost an attachment slot. You can run a five-attachment build plus an Apex attachment, so there’s no reason not to test them.

One catch: Apex attachments unlock only after you max out a weapon’s level. Leveling starts slow, so save those double weapon XP tokens and watch for double XP weekends to speed things up.

Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be running lobbies before the weekend is out.
