Universal‘s Miami Vice ’85 is taking shape as a major 2028 tentpole. Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan have begun filming as Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, with the studio shooting the reboot for IMAX and releasing first-look character images earlier this month.
The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1), is an all-new take on the iconic NBC series that ran from 1984 to 1989, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann.

Miami Vice ’85 Release Date and Story
The official logline describes Miami Vice ’85 as exploring “the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami”, drawing directly from the show’s pilot episode “Brother’s Keeper” and its first season. The script is by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler, Andor), with Kosinski producing alongside Dylan Clark.
Universal has set the release for May 19, 2028, only in theaters — a date that was locked in when production officially began earlier this month.
The Star-Studded Miami Vice ’85 Cast
Butler takes on Crockett, the role made famous by Don Johnson, while Jordan plays Tubbs, originally Philip Michael Thomas. The ensemble keeps growing: Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, Walton Goggins, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, André Holland, Michael Irby, Whitney Peak, Andrew Schulz, and Edi Gathegi are all on board.
Notably, Leguizamo previously appeared in the original series as Orlando Calderone — a fun full-circle moment for longtime fans. With Mann’s 2006 take having earned a cult following and a new director’s cut landing on home video this December, the ’80s Miami fever is fully back.
