Being a professional wrestler can be frustrating when your actions and on-screen personality are shaped by a promotion’s creative team — especially when a segment draws backlash from fans. Speaking to the Michael Fairman Channel in a new interview, Hendry was asked directly about moments where he has not agreed with the ideas WWE creative presented him with.

“I think in professional wrestling, your job is to give it your absolute best with the collaboration that you have, and that’s what I always try to do,” Hendry said. “I always try to give the best I can with the tools that I have available, and that’s what pro wrestling really is because it’s a collaboration.”

“You Are Your Own Brand” — But the Audience Comes First

Hendry framed wrestling as a team effort above all else. “You’ve got these, you know, you are your own brand, but ultimately you’re working together to try and entertain the audience, and that’s, you know, it’s a group of people working together to try and do that,” he explained. “So my goal is to try and execute for the company as best I can.”

It is a philosophy that has served Hendry well as one of wrestling’s most over acts, turning even questionable creative into moments fans remember. Elsewhere in the same interview, Hendry also spoke about a potential future heel turn — a prospect that would test that philosophy in a whole new way.
