King Charles Addresses WHCA Dinner Shooting, Makes Case For U.S.-British Alliance

Published

on

Speaking to a joint meeting of Congress, King Charles made the case for a continued British-U.S. cooperation, including a strong NATO alliance despite attacks on the treaty from Donald Trump and broader calls for American isolationism.

The king and Queen Camilla, on a visit to the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, also addressed the shooting on Saturday at the Washington Hilton, where Trump and top administration officials were attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Calling the assassination attempt the “incident,” Charles told the packed House chamber, “Let me say with unshakeable resolve: such acts of violence will never succeed. Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries.”

Charles’ speech drew heavy turnout on both sides of the aisle, unlike Trump’s State of the Union speech, which saw some empty seats on the Democratic side.

Charles did not mention Trump by name, and he generally avoided diving into the partisan fray.

Yet some of his lines took on different meaning given the rancor on Capitol Hill, including Democrats’ calls on Republicans to hold Trump in check.

“Our Declaration of Rights of 1689 was not only the foundation of our constitutional Monarchy, but also provided the source of so many of the principles reiterated – often verbatim – in the American Bill of Rights of 1791. And those roots go even further back in our history: the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society has calculated that Magna Carta is cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases since 1789, not least as the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances.”

The comment drew a standing ovation on both sides of the aisle, and some laughs among Democrats.

Much of the speech, though, was reminding lawmakers of the strong bonds the two countries have had, including through NATO.

“We do not embark on these remarkable endeavours together out of sentiment. We do so because they build greater shared resilience for the future, so making our citizens safer for generations to come,” the king said.

He also talked about one of his chief concerns: The environment.

“We ignore at our peril the fact that these natural systems — in other words, Nature’s own economy —provide the foundation for our prosperity and our national security,” he said.

The comment also drew a standing ovation, but largely on the Democratic side.

Veteran media and entertainment executive Steve Shikiya has been named Chief Operating Officer of Anonymous Content.

Reporting directly to President and CEO Darren Walker, Shikiya will oversee Anonymous’s day-to-day business operations, including finance, corporate development, business affairs, and human resources. He will work closely with leadership across the management, production and brand studio businesses and support the company’s continued growth.

Shikiya’s appointment follows the recent hires of Liza Burnett Fefferman as Chief Communications and Marketing Officer and Michael Sinclair as Chief Legal Officer.

“Steve has spent his career helping ambitious, independent companies like ours build the foundation to grow and scale while preserving the culture that makes them unique,” said Walker. “On the heels of Anonymous’ strong momentum, his financial expertise and experience executing complex transactions will be instrumental in advancing our strategic priorities – we can’t wait for him to join us.”

Earlier in his career, Shikiya held senior leadership roles at Twentieth Century Fox and held executive positions at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Launch Media, Universal Studios and The Walt Disney Company. He began his career at Arthur Andersen LLP.

Shikiya holds a Master of Business Administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.

“Anonymous Content has an extraordinary legacy, an exceptional roster of artists and a clear commitment to building a truly global, creator-led company,” said Shikiya. “The opportunity to work with Darren and the leadership team to help build the infrastructure, capabilities and strategic partnerships for Anonymous’ next chapter is enormously exciting and I look forward to getting started.”

Jacob Tremblay Smolders in Netflix’s ‘Unabomber’ Trailer

Published

on

Ted Kaczynski doesn’t deserve Jacob Tremblay (Room, Sovereign), but that is who portrays the infamous Unabomber in Netflix‘s upcoming film named after the domestic terrorist. The rest of the cast are pretty good glow-ups of their real-life characters as well: Unabomber also stars Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind), Shailene Woodley (Paradise, The Fault in Our Stars), Annabelle Wallis (Star Trek: Discovery), Alexander Ludwig (Vikings), Steven Ogg (The Walking Dead) and Marc Menchaca (Ozark).

Directed by Janus Metz off a screenplay by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, Unabomber follows Ted Kaczynski’s (Tremblay) transformation from 16-year-old Harvard prodigy into the infamous Unabomber. Subjected to controversial psychological experiments by Professor Henry Murray (Crowe), Kaczynski’s troubled past resurfaces decades later when his manhunt, led by FBI agent Joanne Miller (Woodley), brings to light the chilling consequences of ambition and isolation.

Kaczynski’s attacks killed three people and injured 23 others.

The hunt for the Unabomber spanned 17 years. Kaczynski’s first bombing took place in 1978; he was finally found in a cabin in the woods in 1996. It was the longest manhunt in U.S. history.

Unabomber is executive produced by Greaves, Donald J. Lee and Sam Chalsen in association with MRC. Sophie Cassidy produces for 2.0 Entertainment. Unabomber releases globally on Netflix on Sept. 25, 2026.

Watch the trailer:

Kaczynski died in prison in 2023. He was 81. Kaczynski hanged himself after being diagnosed with late-stage rectal cancer — probably the most fitting final days of all time.
