Wake Forest and Syracuse will open the 2027 college football season in Week 0 in Toronto, the schools and ACC announced Thursday morning.

The ACC contest, which will air on either ABC or ESPN, will kick off either Aug. 28 (a Saturday) or Aug. 29 (a Sunday) with either ABC or ESPN televising. Although Syracuse (3-9 in 2025) is located only 250 miles from Toronto, Wake Forest is designated as the home team. Wake Forest, which was 9-4 last fall, averaged 29,433 fans per home game during the 2025 season. The teams last met in the 2023 regular-season finale.

The game will be played at BMO Field, an outdoor soccer facility that will host World Cup matches this summer and is the home venue of the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. This matchup marks the first American college football game in Toronto since the 2010 International Bowl.

“We are thrilled to bring ACC football to an international stage in Toronto,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in a statement. “This conference game represents an exciting opportunity to showcase our student-athletes and our member institutions, as well as put on full display the energy of college football to a new and diverse audience.”

The ACC has become more aggressive with staging and participating in international football games. This year in Week 0, North Carolina faces TCU in Dublin, Ireland and longtime ACC foes NC State and Virginia meet in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Canadian clash is the second 2027 international contest involving an ACC team. Pittsburgh is scheduled to face Wisconsin in Dublin. The Big 12 also has looked toward international markets with Arizona State and Kansas playing this fall in London.

WTA confirms ‘major milestone’ with equal prize money at combined events

Published

on

Men and women will receive equal prize money at all combined 1000 events – the highest level of competition outside of the Grand Slams – from next year, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced.

Events at Indian Wells, California, Miami, Madrid and Beijing already met that commitment, as well as all four Grand Slams,

However, the Italian Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open will now also fall into line to meet a long-standing aim of the WTA, at events where men and women both feature.

In 2023, Italian Open organisers had vowed to have equal prize money from 2025 but did not follow through on that pledge.

The total men’s prize money this year in Rome was £7.3m while the women received £6.3m.

“Achieving equal prize money across all combined WTA 1000 tournaments is a major milestone for tennis,” said WTA chair Valerie Camillo.

“It demonstrates the WTA’s continued commitment to leading the sports industry in delivering our athletes competitive and financial equality and is a testament to the enduring nature of the founding vision of the WTA.”

The WTA has also announced adjustments to the calendar to give players greater flexibility.

Those alterations include a reduction of WTA 500-level tournaments from six to four, for players ranked inside the top 50 in the world.

And it will also allow players to replace one eligible WTA 1000 tournament result with a stronger WTA 500 or 250 result on their ranking.

“We have listened to player feedback on the demands of the calendar, and responded with a meaningful reduction in commitments,” added Camillo.

American world number three Jessica Pegula added: “The 2027 changes give us more ability to build our seasons around our own goals – competitively and personally.

“That’s an impactful step forward for players.”
