To me, my X-Men!

After years of speculation, and a furious few months of screen tests and dealmaking, Marvel unveiled its X-Men cast at D23 on Friday night.

The movie will star Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Chris Abbott (Prof. X), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Inde Navarrette (Rogue) and Maya Boyd (Storm). Adam Driver is also among the cast as the villain Mr Sinister.

The cast was onstage with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, with Driver making a video appearance.

“Kevin and I have been talking for years about me joining MCU,” Driver said, adding they had “found something perfect with characters I feel very deeply about.”

Some of the cast was known going into D23. Sink was the first piece of the puzzle, with her Jean Grey debuting in Spider-Man: Brand New Day last month. And it was already reported that Kit Connor would play Cyclops and that Samara Weaving would play Emma Frost.

Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier is directing X-Men. When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, the key question among Marvel fans was when the X-Men would come to the MCU.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the X-Men in 1963, with Prof. X leading an original class of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Ice Man against Magneto. It was a foundational text for comic book culture.

It spawned 2000’s X-Men, the Bryan Singer-directed feature that kicked off the modern age of superhero movies and which made Hugh Jackman into a star thanks to his turn as Wolverine. A number of actors from the 2000s movies will return for Avengers: Doomsday, including Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Kelsey Grammer (Beast). In addition, Channing Tatum, who played the card-throwing mutant Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is among the cast.

The 2010s revamp of the X-Men starred James McAvoy as Prof. X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence, Mystique and Nicholas Hoult as Beast.

Incredibles 3 is on its way, and Pixar‘s Pete Docter gave the audience at D23 the first taste of what to expect from the next installment in the beloved franchise.

“If you remember, in the last film, Supers are officially legal again, thanks to this guy, Winston Dever. Now he’s an entrepreneur at heart, so Dever is launching the superhero league. It’s a heavily sponsored organization built on a massive platform of branding, marketing, and merchandising — something we don’t really know anything about at Disney,” Docter joked during Friday’s Disney Entertainment Showcase.

While the first film focused on Bob, and the second was Elastigirl’s time to shine, now is the time for the eldest kids to take center stage. Docter confirmed that Violet and Dash are on a mission to prove themselves as capable Supers in the upcoming film.

“They want to prove that they are ready to be a real Supers, and their parents aren’t quite so convinced. So they’ve been sneaking out at night to protect the city, and it doesn’t go over so well at home. To make matters worse, they are struggling to contain Jack Jack…” he added. “A new threat is taking a heavy toll on Bob, who’s grappling with his own relevance in a world of Supers that may have outgrown him. Because even though Supers are legal again, that doesn’t mean all supers are good.”

Just as Docter was teasing “a super villain with more power than all the family put together and all of the supers,” he was cut off by Edna, who reminded him not to spoil everything ahead of the film’s June 2028 release.

Peter Sohn directs the Brad Bird written threequel. Craig T. Nelson returns as papa superhero, Bob Parr; Sarah Vowell is daughter Violet Parr, Huck Milner is Dash Parr.
