Sebastien Pocognoli is set to be announced as the new Scotland men’s head coach next week.

The Belgian will become the first foreign appointment since Berti Vogts’s spell in charge between 2002 and 2004.

Multiple candidates were interviewed during an extensive search that also used data to identify a coaching style that matched the requirements outlined as key to a successful Scotland team.

The 39-year-old’s tactical work on the training ground and track record of integrating young players have been major factors in his appointment, according to sources with knowledge of the recruitment process.

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) have moved quickly to replace Steve Clarke, who resigned days after Scotland’s World Cup group stage exit despite signing a new four-year contract before the tournament.

The search was led by the SFA’s chief football officer Craig Mulholland, who started his role last month after joining from Nottingham Forest, where he was head of football development and talent management.

Clarke’s 81 games in charge is the most of any Scotland manager in history and Pocognoli will be tasked with qualifying for the 2028 European Championship and the World Cup in 2030.

He won 13 caps for Belgium as a player and played over 300 times domestically with experience of British football during spells at West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Pocognoli’s managerial career started with spells in charge at Royal Union Saint-Gilloise (RUSG), Genk and the Belgium national team, where he oversaw their respective under-18 and under-21 sides. He took over the RUSG first team in 2024, leading them to a first Belgian league title in 90 years and secured Champions League group stage football.

He was hired by AS Monaco last October but sacked this summer after leading them to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1.

Newcastle: Shirts changed in first half of friendly v Bayer Leverkusen

Published

on

Newcastle United changed shirts in the first half of their pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen.

The hosts walked out in their black and white home kit, which has a blue trim, but decided to ditch it during the first hydration break at St James’ Park on Saturday.

There was an apparent colour clash with Bayer Leverkusen’s away kit, which is mint with a blue pattern, so Newcastle players put on their lilac third strip instead.

LeBron James launches YouTube golf channel with video of 2016 Cavs reunion

Published

on

LeBron James has made another decision: He has launched a YouTube golf channel.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer has been very public about expanding his horizons to the fairways, links and greens (and also upset some folks in Memphis while on a golf course earlier this season). Now the 41-year-old is making things YouTube official.

“Follow along as LeBron brings his friends and fans along for the journey as golf takes him to some of the world’s greatest courses,” the description on the page’s first video reads. “Come for the game, stay for the great local food, wine, and a whole lot of laughs along the way.”

The first video features 96 minutes of footage of the reunion of the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers and their summer golf trip to Scotland. Featuring J.R. Smith, Kevin Love, Richard Jefferson and others, the trip celebrated the 10th anniversary of Cleveland’s only NBA title, when the Cavs rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to defeat the defending champion Golden State Warriors.

That Scotland trip also came as the basketball world waited on James’ free-agency decision after he announced in late June he would be departing the Los Angeles Lakers. The Cavaliers were considered a front-runner for much of July, but James eventually agreed to join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal.

Shortly after, The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn offered James suggestions for courses he could hit in the Philly area. Maybe one of those will pop up on his YouTube show in the future.

Where will LeBron play golf in the Philly area?

James began talking publicly about getting into golf in August 2025 and played a round at GreatHorse, a private club in Hampden, Mass., hours before the 2008 Team USA Olympic team was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

“My goal is to open doors for kids that look like me growing up in the inner city, to be able to go to country clubs at 7, 8, 9 years old and be able to go out and caddy or be able to go out and rent clubs and be able to be coached and play the game of golf,” James told NBA agent and Boardroom co-founder Rich Kleiman in July.

The YouTube page, simply titled “LeBron James,” is his latest media venture. He has been a recurring star on the talk show “The Shop” since its inception, started the podcast “Mind the Game” alongside JJ Redick and starred in the movie “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”
